My Scholl Story

Belinda Nash, NZ Girl

I have been lucky enough to try out the new Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Nail Care System to give myself natural shiny and healthy nails, and you can watch my video here:

Scholl have been in the foot love business for 100 years and as well as sharing a century of expertise, the people at Scholl want your feet to feel amazing. The new Electronic Nail Care System files, buffs and shines your nails, and you can finish your tootsie treatment with Scholl Nail Care Oil to soften your cuticles. Before I started the nail file-buff-shine trio, I also used the Velvet Smooth Express Pedi with actual diamond crystals, which can be washed easily and used over again and again. I also applied the Velvet Smooth Essential Moisture Cream and Intense Serum at the beginning. Tonight, to give myself a treat, I’m going to pop on the Velvet Night Mask and refresh my feet for another week!

Happy Feet Matter

The importance of feet is not just in how they look, however. Like eyes, our feet are the windows to our sole… OK, to our health and well-being. I am a trained reflexologist and in my training and practice I learned how feet can mirror the state of – and then to aid in the healing of – parts of our body. It might sound strange but you’d be surprised (as was I) about what I learned of people through examining their feet – including knowing what stage of a woman’s menstrual cycle, and if they had a full bladder. Weird, but true.

All that aside our feet are our body’s unsung heroes. Our magnificent feet:

  • Carry our full body weight
  • Keep us (literally) grounded and in touch with the world around us
  • Get shoved into ill-fitting shoes and don’t complain (much)
  • Are made to walk in badly designed heels then stand for hours and hours
  • And are then made to walk barefoot on the footpath when we can’t handle our heels any more!

And that’s just the start of what they endure. But unlike our hair, body and face, we neglect our feet because they’re hidden from the world. Imagine the time and attention you give your hair and skin care and shared some of that with your feet?

Feet are so un-loved in fact that hospitals have reported that rough sleepers present with the most neglected feet of any people they see. This was such a factor that the UK’s Guardian newspaper reported on an A-Z of Homelessness, highlight the letter F for Feet where:

“F is for feet, because homeless people spend all day on their feet.”

Make Time to Care

You and I are in the lucky position that we can make room to add footcare into our health and beauty routines, and we here at nzgirl are doing just that. We’re doing a summer make-over, inside and out, starting from the ground up; we’re starting with our feet.

Getting in touch with your foot health and any secrets lurking behind our tootsies starts with looking at them. Really look at them! Look for issues like blisters, corns, eczema, layers of hard skin, cracks, verrucas and fungus between the toes and toe nails. If you notice anything you’ve missed over winter, get to your doctor or health professional because it could point to a bigger issue. If your feet get the visual all clear, start massaging them with a foot creme, trim the nails, remove dead skin and generally let your feet breathe. Summer holidays are the perfect time to get out of shoes.

If you’re still not convinced, this article in MedicinePlus will change how you consider your feet, summarising foot health here:

It wasn’t so many years ago that people with diabetes had their feet amputated due to foot ulcers caused by poor circulation. According to the Mayo Clinic “better diabetes care is probably why the rates of lower limb amputations have gone down by more than 50 percent in the past 20 years.”

Create a Routine

OK, now that the grim reality of feet neglect is over, it’s time to look how we can show our feet some love. This can be done in front of the TV, after a shower, or outside on a sunny Saturday after the gym with a coffee beside you. And best of all, when you give yourself a pedicure at home, you can be 100% assured of the quality of the products you use, and their cleanliness. A friend of mine Sarah, had an horrific experience at a spa ending with an infected foot which could have lead to amputation if it hadn’t been caught in time.

So investigate your pedicure options, or just do what I did this weekend, and give yourself the luxury pamper you deserve.

We love a great mani-pedi but these things take time. Say hello to your new time and life saviour: the Scholl Nail Care System. Not even kidding, this system will change your beauty routine and return you to 24/7 nail love.
